UN secretary general could help secure stop to east Ukraine violence - Russian envoy

NEW YORK. May 29 (Interfax) - Russia is asking UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to contribute to efforts aimed at securing a halt to violence in Ukraine as soon as possible, Russia's UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin has said.

"Let's take a look at how this violence can be stopped as soon as possible. By the way, my Ukrainian colleague may have said one more useful thing that he would welcome the [UN] secretary general's mediation efforts. Maybe, the secretary general will indeed immediately join the process of securing a halt to the violence in the east of Ukraine," Churkin said at a UN Security Council meeting.

The Russian envoy also urged the Ukrainian authorities to try to develop relations constructively and find a way out of the continuing crisis in the country as soon as possible.
