Churkin hopeful Poroshenko tries to stop violence after his inauguration

UNITED NATIONS. June 4 (Interfax) - The inauguration of Ukrainian President Elect Petro Poroshenko should become a prologue of the soonest termination of the army operation in southeastern Ukraine, Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin said.

"We were told the situation would drastically improve after the election but in fact it deteriorated. Poroshenko said in his statement that the military operation in eastern Ukraine must be bolstered. Hopefully, after he takes the oath we will hear [about an improvement] or he will do something else," Churkin told reporters on Tuesday.

Churkin noted that Poroshenko should make an effort to rapidly stop violence in Ukraine "if he really wants to preserve the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country and unite [the nation] around himself as the president."
