Estonia to buy U.S. third-generation anti-tank systems
TALLINN. June 6 (Interfax) - The Estonian government instructed Defense Minister Sven Mikser on Thursday to start negotiations on the procurement of U.S. third-generation anti-tank systems Javelin Block.
Mikser told a press conference the procurement was stipulated by the state defense program of 2013-2020 as a way to upgrade the Estonian potential for ground operations.
For instance, the program says anti-tank systems will be bought for both brigades of the Defense Forces, the minister said.
Bearing in mind international tensions and depleting security, the government has decided to enlarge and speed up the procurement of anti-tank systems.
The United States has offered Estonia to buy Javelin anti-tank systems with missile ammunition and training gear.
"The U.S. proposition meets our defense needs and pricing policy, so the government has decided to start the negotiations," the defense minister said.
