Nearly 80 populated areas affected by floods in Altai Territory

BARNAUL. June 6 (Interfax) - More than 60 populated areas in Russia's Altai Territory, which were flooded have been cleared of flood waters, the region's governor Aleksandr Karlin told an emergency commission on Friday.

He said a total of 78 populated areas in 18 municipalities have been affected by the floods in the Altai Territory. Six socially-significant healthcare institutions in the city of Biysk and the Biysk and Bystroistok districts were flooded.

"We are seeing various stages of flooding caused by rain. In some parts, water is receding, and to date 61 populated areas in eleven districts across the Territory have been cleared from water. As the floods are receding from the upper reaches of Katun, Biy, Anuy and Charysh (rivers), the peak of flooding is shifting to the (River) Ob streamway. Today we have a situation where water levels are rising faster than the previous day in Barnaul," the governor said.

A total of 11,420 residential buildings and 12,362 land plots in the region have been flooded since the floods began, the governor said. At the time of the flooding, the houses were inhabited by 30,323 people, including 7,364 children.

A total of 83 temporary accommodation centers with a 21,000 total capacity have been opened across the Territory. Currently, these centers are housing 1,212 people.

Fourteen populated areas in six municipalities across the Territory remain flooded, the regional governor said. The number of flooded houses currently stands at 2,882; accommodation has been provided for their 6,385 residents.

The governor said that in areas where water has receded, 3,700 farmsteads and 41 kilometers of roads have been cleaned up and 2 kilometers of roads and two bridges restored.

"We have already paid out over 100 million rubles of urgent material aid to the people affected by the floods," Karlin said.
