Russia hails S.Ossetia's successful parliamentary elections - ministry
MOSCOW. June 9 (Interfax) - The Russian Foreign Ministry has praised the free and democratic nature of the parliamentary elections held in South Ossetia.
"The Russian and other foreign observers who were present at the elections acknowledged the free and democratic nature of the popular vote," the ministry said in a statement on its website.
"Russia welcomes the parliamentary elections held successfully in the friendly South Ossetia, which became another important step on the path of gradual development of the republic's institutions of power and civil society," the ministry said.
The South Ossetian elections were held amidst internal political stability and high voter turnout, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
"Candidates from nine political parties were fighting for votes. Most of the 34 seats in the country's legislature were won by the United Ossetia Party," the statement said.
