SCO plans to form specialized counter-terror unit

BEIJING. June 10 (Interfax) - The leadership of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) intends to establish a unit that will specialize in combating terrorism, the China Daily newspaper reported on Tuesday.

"Many terrorists who carried out deadly attacks in China watched or listened to video or audio files online with extremist ideological content, but such materials are produced or uploaded outside China," Zhang Xinfeng, director of the Eurasian grouping's regional anti-terrorist structure executive committee, said at its headquarters in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan.

This unit will be set up in order to "deal with the new situation," he said.

The new unit will provide assistance to China, especially to the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, Zhang said.
