Ukrainian foreign ministry defends Kyiv's right to unilateral demarcation of border with Russia

KYIV. June 17 (Interfax) - The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has stated that Russia is blocking its efforts to demarcate the joint border, and so Kyiv has the full right to unilateral demarcation.

"Regrettably, Russia has deliberately been blocking the demarcation process," Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Yevhen Perebyinis said at a briefing on Tuesday, adding that, "Ukraine therefore has the full right to demarcate the national borderline in the area unilaterally."

Asserting that Russia has experience in unilateral border demarcation, Perebyinis said: "This is why any protests on Russia's part certainly testify to the use of double standards."

On June 16 the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council instructed the government to take whatever measures necessary for unilateral border demarcation with Russia.
