Matviyenko: Kyiv is not disposed to stopping punitive operation in southeastern Ukraine

MOSCOW. June 20 (Interfax) - Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko has accused the "war party" governing Ukraine of slaughtering people in southeastern regions.

The events evolving in southeastern Ukraine are a punitive operation "against the civilian population and the Kyiv authorities are not going to stop it," Matviyenko wrote in her blog. On the contrary, the "manslaughter" is growing in scale and cruelty day upon day, she said.

"The war party, which is actually governing contemporary Ukraine, is holding operations with Western blessing to cleanse southeastern Ukraine from "the wrong" Ukrainians. "The right" Ukrainian etalon is a carrier of the ideology of radical nationalism, Russophobia, neo-Nazism and unlimited violence," Matviyenko said.

This is happening in the very heart of Europe, which experienced in the recent historical period what deprivations and suffering fascism brings to the people, the speaker said. "It is hard to understand why the leaders and politicians of European countries and EU officials have forgotten in an instance the history lessons. Why they cover up for and approve of the actually criminal deeds of the Kyiv authorities, Ukrainian law enforcers and self-proclaimed military units. How it has happened so that the real position of the West drastically differs from its declared adherence to the values of humanism, democracy, human rights and freedoms," Matviyenko wondered.

A possible reason is the wish of the United States and their partners to reanimate the geopolitical project routed in the previous century, she premised. This project is the so-called "sanitary cordon" the leading European nations built in 1920-1930 along the western borders of the former Russian Empire to isolate the Soviet Union, the speaker said.

"That policy was a factor encouraging Hitler's aggression. There is a brand new historical period now. Nevertheless, the West is again using the same methods - NATO enlargement towards Russian borders, sanctions and support to the political regimes which are loyal to the West and, to put it mildly, are cool towards our country," Matviyenko continued.

The goal of this policy is to force Russia to quit its independent policy and its own, historically developed system of cultural, moral and spiritual values and to follow the Western way, Matviyenko said.

"The instatement in office of the Kyiv forces oriented towards the United States and the European Union is a component part of this strategy, a brick in the wall of the new "sanitary cordon." But Russia has enough political, economic, military and spiritual resources to resist this pressure," Matviyenko said.

She is confident that Ukraine and the Ukrainian people will be strong enough to rid the "Russophobic doping".

"The Russian state is doing its best to stop the bloodshed in the Luhansk and Donetsk regions and to create conditions for a free and equal dialogue between all regions of Ukraine, all responsible political forces," she said.
