Over 50 ships to join Russian Navy in 2014 - Navy commander

KRONSTADT. June 20 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian Navy is actively rearming, and new warships and support ships are being built for it, Russian Navy Commander Adm. Viktor Chirkov said on Friday.

"The construction of new vessels and ships for the Navy is gaining positive ground. Over 50 ships and support vessels will join the Navy this year alone. The serial strategic cruiser submarine Alexander Nevsky was commissioned in 2014. The construction of the Vladimir Monomakh cruiser submarine is nearing completion," Chirkov said in a greeting speech to graduates of naval colleges on Yakornaya (Anchor) Square in Kronstadt, St. Petersburg on Friday.

The Severodvinsk cruiser submarine with cruise missiles was commissioned for the Navy on June 17, he added.
