Russian FM commemorates 1915 Armenian genocide victims in Yerevan

YEREVAN. June 23 (Interfax) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov laid a wreath to the memorial to the victims of the 1915 Armenian genocide in the Ottoman Empire in Yerevan on Monday.

The minister came to Armenia on Sunday on a two-day official visit.

The memorial to the victims of the 1915 Armenian genocide in the Ottoman Empire was built in 1967 on the orders from the leadership of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic. It symbolizes the grief for the victims of the manslaughter and deportation and the revival of the Armenian people.

Russian President Vladimir Putin was the first leader of contemporary Russia to visit the memorial on September 15, 2001. He visited the memorial again on December 2, 2013, during his state visit to Armenia.
