Persons associated with Hizb ut-Tahrir detained in St. Petersburg

ST. PETERSBURG. June 24 (Interfax) - Persons accused of being involved with the Hizb ut-Tahrir international terrorist organization have been detained in St. Petersburg, the local branch of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) said in a press release on Tuesday.

The suspects were detained in a joint operation conducted by the city's FSB branch and police.

"The detained persons helped organize the functioning of the organization's unit in St. Petersburg. An inquiry against the unit's members was started as part of a criminal case opened by FSB investigators on the counts of "organizing the activities of a terrorist organization" (Part 1 of Article 205.5 of the Russian Criminal Code) and "organizing the activities of an extremist group" (Part 1 of Article 282.2)," it said.

Measures of restraint will soon be imposed on them.

Russia's Supreme Court recognized Hizb ut-Tahrir as a terrorist organization and banned its operations within Russian territory on February 14, 2003.
