Federation Council committee to back revocation of permission to use Russian troops in Ukraine - head of committee

MOSCOW. June 24 (Interfax) - The Federation Council on defense and security will recommend that the Federation Council revoke the permission given to the Russian president to use the army on the territory of Ukraine.

"Our committee will recommend that the Federation Council back the position of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has asked the Federation Council to cancel the decree on the use of our troops on the territory of Ukraine," Senator Viktor Ozerov, the head of the committee, told Interfax.

Ozerov recalled that the Federation Council authorized the use of the Russian troops on the territory of Ukraine in March because there was a security threat to the people of Crimea and Sevastopol.

"Now there is no such threat to the residents of these regions. Apparently, the first real steps are being taken by the sides to the military conflict in the southeast, with Russia's assistance in the settlement of this situation. In this situation, the permission given by the Federation Council to use the Russian army led to speculation by various forces, including in Europe and in the West. The president is absolutely right to ask us to cancel this decision," Ozerov said.

After the Federation Council adopts an appropriate statement cancelling the permission to use the Russian army on the territory of Ukraine on June 25, no one will be able to speculate that the Russian army can begin military action to protect civilians at any moment, he said.
