Cancellation of decision on use of Russian troops in Ukraine is aimed at supporting Poroshenko peace plan - Ukrainian presidential envoy
KYIV. June 24 (Interfax) - The request made by Russian President Vladimir Putin to the Russian Federation Council to cancel the decision it made on March 1 granting him the right to use Russian troops on the territory of Ukraine indicates the Russian leader's support of Petro Poroshenko's peace plan, Iryna Herashchenko, Ukrainian presidential envoy on the situation in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, said.
"It is an indication that President Putin backs President Poroshenko's peace plan. Russia has recognized the new legitimate Ukrainian administration, the newly elected president. It is indicated by the beginning of dialogue and the recognition of the peace plan," Herashchenko told Interfax on Tuesday.
At the same time, she said Ukraine expects Russia to take real steps to de-escalate the situation in the eastern regions of Ukraine, withdraw its military units from the border, and a prompt decision by the Russian Federation Council on the March 1 decision.
"We expect Russia to use all its leverage on the militants to cause them to fulfill the president's peace plan, specifically, lay down their weapons and free all hostages, stop using weapons against civilians and provoking the Ukrainian army, and promote de-escalation, not fuel the conflict," Herashchenko said.
