Ukrainian envoy to UN complains about increasing number of Russian troops near border
KYIV. June 24 (Interfax) - Kyiv welcomes the Russian Federation's expected move to rescind its earlier resolution authorizing the use of Russian armed forces in Ukraine but has noticed increased activity of Russian troops near Ukrainian borders.
"We welcome the Russian president's intention to rescind the Federation Council's decision regarding the use of the armed forces on Ukrainian territory. However, concentration of Russian servicemen and military hardware in Russian districts bordering Ukraine has significantly grown in the past several days, and we are witnessing this," Ukrainian permanent representative in the UN Yury Serheyev said at a UN Security Council session on Tuesday.
In response to the Ukrainian president's peace initiatives, members of illegal armed units are continuing their attacks, violating a ceasefire, he said.
The Ukrainian diplomat also called on all international partners to support the Ukrainian authorities' efforts toward restoring peace. "We are asking the international community to support [Ukrainian President Petro] Poroshenko's peace plan for eastern Ukraine," Serheyev said.
