Gang member detained in Thailand to be extradited to Russia

MOSCOW. June 25 (Interfax) - The Russian Investigative Committee is awaiting extradition from Thailand to Russia of a member of a gang involved in number of murders in 1990s, the Investigative Committee press office said.

"Alexander Matusov has just been detained thanks to the cooperation between the Russian and Thai law enforcement authorities and he will be brought to Russia soon to the investigator of the Russian Investigative Committee main investigative department for the Moscow region," the press office said in a statement obtained by Interfax on Wednesday.

After Matusov is brought to the investigator, he will be charged with several attempted murders of businessmen, the document said.

According to the information of investigators, on November 17, 1996, members of the gang headed by Pavel Bondartskov attacked four businessmen in the village of Sverdlovskoye in the Moscow region's Shchyolkovsky district - as a result three men were killed and one was injured.

Eight gang members, including its leaders, have been sentenced from six to 21 years in a maximum security colony and Izmestyev was sentenced to life imprisonment, the Investigative Committee said.

Another suspect accused in absentia - Oleg Rogatin - is still on the international wanted list, the press office said.
