Russian strategic missile unit fends off simulated saboteur attack - ministry

MOSCOW. June 25 (Interfax-AVN) - A strategic missile regiment has successfully trained "rebuffing of action by sabotage and reconnaissance groups of a simulated enemy" as part of a snap inspection of Russia's Central Military District, the Defense Ministry said on Wednesday.

This training session of the regiment, which is part of the Tagil Missile Division, was the first-ever exercise where Typhoon-M anti-sabotage combat vehicles were used, the ministry said in a statement made available to Interfax-AVN. Two Typhoon-M's were used in the exercise. The division's mobile units have been receiving Typhoon-M vehicles since 2013.

Typhoon-M's are equipped with drones, and it is with the two vehicles' drones that the regiment detected logistics and security guard teams from other missile units that imitated enemy saboteur and reconnaissance groups. The teams were spotted a long way from the regiment's field positions.

The regiment's security guards successfully changed their tactics and fending off a simulated attack.

The simulated enemy scouts and saboteurs, who were more numerous than the regiment's guards, were unable to thwart a simulated missile attack by the regiment. The missile launch was carried out on time, the statement said.

The regiment had also trained in self-protection at an earlier phase of the inspection, when the unit had also trained in camouflaging, engineer and radiation reconnaissance, and tactical orientation, the ministry said.
