Russia, Egypt discuss possible nuclear power plant construction

OBNINSK. June 26 (Interfax) - Rosatom and Egypt are discussing the possible construction of a nuclear power plant (NPP).

Dzhomart Aliyev, the general director of CSJC Rusatom Overseas, told journalists that in January 2014, Egypt received Rosatom's proposals and an answer to its questions [regarding the construction of a NPP]. "Yesterday a request arrived asking that we resend the second part of the proposal that was sent in January with a new addressee," he said.

In Egypt the situation is similar to that of Argentina, that is, today it is not known whether or not private investors will take part in the construction of the station, whether a tender will be announced or direct negotiations [will take place], Aliyev said.

In August 2010 the Egyptian authorities announced that they intended to build a NNP on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and expected to begin using the first power-generating unit in 2019. After the construction of the first unit, construction would begin on another three reactors, which are tentatively planned to be commissioned in 2025.
