New artillery regiment put on duty in Crimea

ROSTOV-ON-DON. July 2 (Interfax-AVN) - A new artillery regiment has been formed in Crimea and joined the Black Sea Fleet, the Southern Military District press service told Interfax-AVN on Wednesday.

"The servicemen began their mission of protecting the coastline in late June," a district spokesman said.

The new regiment possesses about 300 units of weapons and military hardware, among them over 60 new artillery systems, Khrizantema anti-tank systems, 152-mm Msta automatic gun laying howitzers and Tornado-G multiple launch rocket systems.

The military unit is staffed on a mixed principle. Positions essential for the combat preparedness of artillery units, mostly gun commanders, gun layers, topographical surveyors and drivers, are occupied by contract servicemen.

The regiment will take part in field training exercises of missile forces and artillery at the Angarsky range in Crimea in August. The artillery men will be upgrading their skills and combat cohesion for a month and hold tactical live fire exercises in the final stage of the drill. Half of the exercises, including live fire practice, will take place at night.
