Serial rapist escapes from Russian police, caught in Kyiv
MOSCOW. July 7 (Interfax) - Suspected serial rapist Yevgeny Litovchenko who escaped from the Leningrad region police in June during a crime re-enactment has been detained in Kyiv where he committed another crime, the Russian Interior Ministry press center told Interfax.
"Yevgeny Litovchenko who ran away during a crime re-enactment in early July, has been apprehended in Kyiv in a joint operation of the St. Petersburg police, the Main Criminal Investigation Department of the Russian Interior Ministry and the Ukrainian police," a ministry spokesman said.
The police learned shortly after his escape that Litovchenko might be hiding in Kyiv, Ukraine, he said.
"Cooperation with the Ukrainian law enforcement authorities was launched immediately in order to find and detain the criminal. The joint efforts helped the operatives to locate Litovchenko and to organize his detention. Meanwhile, the fugitive committed a similar crime on the Ukrainian territory," the spokesman said.
Litovchenko was taken into custody and the Ukrainian police agreed to extradite him to Russia, the Russian Interior Ministry noted.
Litovchenko was detained in April 2014 on suspicion of raping a 14-year-old girl and indicted. Detectives suspect Litovchenko of having committed at least ten similar crimes.
