Russia tightens rules on meat and meat product deliveries transiting EU

MOSCOW. July 11 (Interfax) - Russian agricultural watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor will impose stricter rules on animal product imports that transit the EU effective July 21.

Products subject to veterinary control produced in third countries that transit the EU may only be delivered in vehicles and containers sealed in the exporting country not unsealed before arrival in Russia. The products must be accompanied by the original veterinary certification from the country of origin.

The terms do not apply to production from Andorra, the Vatican, Lichtenstein, Iceland, Monaco, Norway, San Marino and Switzerland, or to the following animal products: live, non-mammals, house pets and animal companions, products of taxidermy (collectibles and trophies), feed and feed additives, marine bio-resources and products from them, finished food and feed products packaged for retail sale and identifying the production enterprise, and medicines for animals and other veterinary products (diagnostics, disinfection, rat control).

The new rules are aimed at preventing the spread of infectious animal diseases and the importation of animal products not meeting safety requirements.

Similar rules had previously been in effect only for products transiting EU-member state Lithuania.
