Georgian Interior Ministry reports seizure of nearly 3 tonnes of liquid heroin

TBILISI. July 11 (Interfax) - Officers from the Georgian Interior Ministry and the Finance Ministry's Revenue Service have seized a record amount of liquid heroin worth hundreds of millions of dollars in a joint operation.

The operatives detained 2 Georgian citizens, in whose truck about 2,790 kilos of liquid heroin was discovered, the Interior Ministry reported on Friday.

Georgia has never seized such amount of illicit drugs before.

"The investigation has determined that the truck entered Georgia from Azerbaijan and was moving toward Turkey," it said.

The law enforcement seized 93 barrels, each holding 30 kilos of liquid heroin, it said.

"Preliminary findings by criminology experts show that this drug substance contains 80% of pure heroin. The market value of the seized cargo amounts to hundreds of millions of dollars," it said.

An investigation into the matter has been opened.
