Detention conditions for Russian citizen Seleznyov in U.S. not acceptable - Russian Foreign Ministry
MOSCOW. July 15 (Interfax) - Moscow seeks the return of Roman Seleznyov, whom the U.S. authorities accuse of cyber crimes, Russian Foreign Ministry Human Rights Ombudsman Konstantin Dolgov said.
"We are seeking the return of Seleznyov. His detention conditions are not acceptable and this was confirmed after consular employees visited him," Dolgov told Interfax on Tuesday.
Seleznyov was detained by U.S. special services on July 5 in the international airport of the Maldives in Male on accusations of illegal operations with credit cards. On the same day he was brought by private jet plane to Guam, where a U.S. military base is.
According to the statement posted on the Russian Foreign Ministry website, Dolgov took a demarche regarding a minister counselor of the U.S. embassy in Moscow on July 14.
"We have emphasized the unacceptability of such actions, which seriously violate legitimate rights and interests of the Russian citizen, who essentially was kidnapped from the territory of a third country. We have demanded Seleznyov's release," the document said.
"Once again we drew the attention to the situation concerning Russian citizen Konstantin Yaroshenko who is serving time in the United States over a politically motivated sentence. We strongly urged Washington to take practical measures to stop inhumane treatment of our fellow citizens suffering from serious diseases and provide him with qualified treatment, including by letting Russian doctors have to access him," the statement said.
