Grain harvest in Uzbekistan up 5.8% to record 8 mln tonnes in 2014

TASHKENT. July 16 (Interfax) - The grain harvest in Uzbekistan in 2014 was 8.05 million tonnes.

Uzbek President Islam Karimov, in a letter to grain farmers about the completion of the grain harvesting season, said that such a grain harvest was collected for the first time in the country's agricultural history despite adverse weather and climatic conditions.

The 2013 harvest was 7.61 million tonnes of grain. The grain harvest rose 5.8% this year.

The president said that the republic, which 23 years ago bought 5 million tonnes of grain a year, could now provide enough grain for its own population of 31 million and also export grain. Grain procurement has risen from 940,000 tonnes to 8 million tonnes, and grain yield has risen 17 to 55 centners per hectare in that time.
