GM Uzbekistan ups automobile production 6.3% in H1
TASHKENT. July 21 (Interfax) - The GM Uzbekistan joint venture, formerly UzDaewooAuto and based in Asaka, Uzbekistan, increased automobile production by 6.3% in January-June 2014 to 127,774 vehicles.
Uzbekistan's State Statistics Committee said that the company produced 29,699 Nexia vehicles, down 2.4% from H1 2013; 7,267 Matiz, down 58%; 9,702 Damas, down 14.6%; 337 Lacetti, down 97.5%; 14,828 Spark, down 2.4%; 3,476 Captiva, up 2.8-fold; 2,309 Malibu, up 76.2%; 32,639 Cobalt, up 9.7%; 26,953 Gentra and 563 Orlando.
GM Uzbekistan began producing the Chevrolet Gentra in November 2013 and the Chevrolet Orlando in March 2014.
UzDaewooAuto was set up on an equal footing by the Uzbek government and Daewoo Motor. In 1996, the company built its factory in Asaka, Andijan Province, with an estimated capacity of 200,000 vehicles a year.
In October 2005, Uzbekistan bought out Daewoo Motor in the JV and transferred 100% of the outfit's stock into management by OJSC UzAutoProm.
In October 2007, UzAutoProm and General Motors signed an agreement on setting up GM Uzbekistan at UzDaewooAuto, in which GM holds a quarter of the stock.
The joint venture currently produces ten models of cars, including five sedans - Nexia, Cobalt, Lacetti, Gentra and Malibe, two compact cars - Matiz and Spark, the Captiva four-by-four, the Orlando minivan and the Damas microbus. Three models, Captiva, Malibu and Orlando, are produced by semi knocked down assembly and the rest are produced using full scale production.
