Approx. 15 tonnes of drugs seized in Russia in H1 2014 - FSKN

MOSCOW. July 23 (Interfax) - The Russian Federal Drug Control Service (FSKN) seized about 15 tonnes of narcotic drugs, an amount sufficient for making 0.5 billion doses, in the first half of 2014, FSKN chief Viktor Ivanov said.

He told the FSKN Board on Wednesday about the ongoing increase in the trafficking of opiates, primarily Afghan heroin, and a spike in the supply of new types of synthetic drugs.

"This is proven with the 50% increase in the amount of opiates seized in the first half of 2014, 2.5 tonnes, the 30% growth in the amount of impounded Afghan heroin, 1.7 tonnes, and the 150% growth in the amount of confiscated synthetic drugs, 3 tonnes," Ivanov said.

"The seized drugs comprise 250 main types and over 1,000 derivatives and analogues. The total volume stands at 15 tonnes or 0.5 billion doses," he said.

FSKN detected and solved 82% of organized drug crimes (10,790 out of 12,771), including those involving 846 drug groups or, actually, drug syndicates.
