Two towns shelled in Donetsk region

DONETSK. July 27 (Interfax) - The town of Avdiyivka near Donetsk was shelled on Saturday, representatives of the Political Department of the Donetsk militia's headquarters told Interfax.

The Ukrainian military shelled the town with Grad multiple launchers from the village of Orlovka, killing five people and wounding about 50. Five apartment buildings were damaged," they said, citing local residents' accounts.

"This information is being checked," they said.

A shelling attack on the town of Horlivka caused serious casualties, according to eyewitnesses. Apartment blocks, a maternity hospital, two clinics and the building of the local prosecutor's office were damaged, local residents said.

"Shells were presumably fired from the side of Dzerzhynsk. Up to ten people were killed, including a family of three, among them a 12 months-old girl," local resident Viktoria Bondar wrote in her blog.

Meanwhile, a fight was on in Shakhtarsk between the Donetsk republic's militia and Ukrainian forces as of 2 p.m. local time.

"The Ukrainian military launched an intensive artillery attack on the town later in the day and then continued the offensive, using two armored columns," the Political Department said.

The attack on Shakhtarsk aims to cut the militia's Donetsk garrison from the positions near the Russian border, it said.

Fighting is also continuing in the Amvrosiyivka district, near the village of Blahodatne, an also in the village of Pisky and outside the Donetsk airport, according to the Donetsk militia.
