Lithuania accepts proposal on Belarus NPP - Belarusian foreign minister

MINSK. July 28 (Interfax) - Belarus and Lithuania have negotiated a compromise on the construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant.

"Following talks that lasted for several months, Belarus' compromise-based proposal on the construction of a nuclear power plant, which was strongly opposed by Lithuania, has been finally accepted," Belarusian Foreign Minster Vladimir Makei said on STV Belarusian television on Sunday.

He said this issue was discussed during Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius' visit to Minsk. "The talks dealt with trade and economic cooperation between our two countries in the first place," he said.

"Of course, we did not side-step political interaction and discussed our relations with the European Union and Lithuania in this area," Makei said.

"There is a host of what I would call problematical issues which remain on the agenda. But most important, we could see preparedness for dialogue and the wish to tackle these problematical problems through this dialogue," he said.
