Explosions reported near Donetsk train station

MOSCOW. July 29 (Interfax) - Shell explosions are audible near a train station in Donetsk on Tuesday afternoon, the head of the South-Eastern Front information center Kostiantyn Knyryk told Interfax on Tuesday.

"Currently, explosions are heard near the train station. The shelling has been consistent and continual," he said.

According to the militia, a number of residential buildings have been damaged as a result of the artillery fire on Donetsk.

"Preliminary data suggest that several shells hit two nine-storey residential buildings in Batishchev Street. The upper floors of one of them were seriously damaged as a result. Traces of fragments remained on the facade of the house. The shell also hit a nearby non-residential structure," Knyryk said.

Meanwhile, the evacuation has begun on several streets in Donetsk which came under fire on Tuesday afternoon.

The center of Donetsk came under artillery fire at 12.20 p.m. local time (1:20 p.m. Moscow time), the city council said on its official website.

"According to the State Service for Emergency Situations in the Donetsk region, by 1 p.m. (2 p.m. Moscow time) shells had damaged a multi-storey residential building in Trenyov Street and an administrative building in Batishchev Street, as well as parked vehicles. Three shells hit the ponds in the Shcherbakov culture and recreation park. Residents, as well as park visitors and staff are being moved from Trenyov and Batishchev Streets into shelters and safe zones," the city council said.

There is no information about casualties yet.
