Period of early parliamentary election campaign in Ukraine could be reduced from 60 to 45 days

KYIV. July 31 (Interfax) - Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, Parliament Speaker Oleksandr Turchynov, Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk and the leaders of parliamentary factions and groups have agreed that the early parliamentary election campaign in Ukraine could be reduced from 60 to 45 days.

"According to Verkhovna Rada Chairman Turchynov, the meeting addressed the 2014 early parliamentary elections. Given the adoption by the parliament of a law amending the Ukrainian state budget for this year and a substantial reduction in budget expenditures, the meeting participants agreed on the need to reduce the cost of election procedures and reduce in this regard the period of the election campaign from 60 to 45 days," a report posted on the Ukrainian parliament website says.

The report notes that the meeting between the head of state, the parliament speaker, the prime minister and the leaders of parliamentary factions and groups took place on Thursday after a plenary meeting of the Verkhovna Rada.

On July 24, Ukrainian Parliament Speaker Oleksandr Turchynov officially announced the dissolution of the European Choice parliamentary coalition of the Ukrainian parliament. The UDAR and Svoboda factions and 19 independent parliamentarians announced their decision to leave the coalition earlier that day.

If no new coalition is formed within thirty days following the dissolution of the previous coalition, the president will have the right to dissolve the parliament and call early parliamentary elections.

Poroshenko said in parliament on Thursday that early parliamentary elections "are already a reality."
