Uzbek citizens devoid of ideas of Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan - theologian

TASHKENT. Aug 6 (Interfax) - Muslims of Uzbekistan and spiritual leaders are united in the opinion that the ideas of the so-called Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) has no support in the country, famous Uzbek theologian, Deputy Chairman of Uzbekistan's Spiritual Administration of the Muslims Sheikh Abdulaziz Mansur told reporters.

"Organizations similar to the IMU distort the ideas of Islam. This is evident to all true believers. Only an illiterate or lost person can end up in the nets of extremists because all their dogmas are lies," Sheikh Abdulaziz Mansur said.

"The falsehood of the IMU, covering its terrorist activities with Quran," is obvious to all Muslims of Uzbekistan, he said.

Islam is a peaceful and tolerant religion, the theologian said.

As of now, over 2,220 religious organizations of 16 different confessions operate in Uzbekistan and 90% of them are Muslim organizations because most of the population of the country professes Islam.
