Russia will continue to honor international court rulings - Supreme Court chairman

MOSCOW. Aug 7 (Interfax) - Russian Supreme Court Chairman Vyacheslav Lebedev vows that the renewed composition of the court will continue to serve as an example of justice and is determined to take into account rulings by international courts.

"I am convinced that the Russian Supreme Court will remain an example of justice," Lebedev said in a conversation with journalists on Thursday.

In commenting on the priority of international law over national law and remarks by some public figures suggesting that the European Court of Human Rights' rulings may be ignored, Lebedev vowed that Russian courts "will continue to take into account international court rulings."

"The rights and freedoms of man and of the citizen remain in effect, commonly recognized international norms remain in effect, and nobody has canceled them. Nobody thinks so and nobody tells the judicial system that the European Court's rulings don't need to be honored," Lebedev said.

Russian Constitutional Court Chairman Valery Zorkin had said repeatedly earlier that Russia should not strictly implement the ECRH's rulings that, in his view, are not consistent with the Russian constitution.
