Rosatom receives positive review on second phase of Kudankulam NPP in India

MOSCOW. Aug 8 (Interfax) - Russian State Nuclear Energy Company Rosatom has received a positive review from Indian supervisory bodies for seismic work carried out in the second phase of the Kudankulam nuclear power plant (NPP) project, the corporation's director for capital investment, Gennady Sakharov, told journalists.

"We receive positive review on seismic work at Kudankulam," he said.

The head of Rosatom, Sergei Kiriyenko, has previously said that after the company received a positive review, it would be ready to sign a contract.

The Kudankulam NPP is being built in India under the November 20, 1998 bilateral agreement and the June 21, 1998 annex thereto. In 2002, Atomstroyexport (part of Rosatom) started building the first two power units with VVLR-1000 reactors with a total capacity of 2000 MW. On October 22, 2013, the first power unit at the Kudankulam NPP was connected to power. The launch of the second one is scheduled for March 2015. The road map for nuclear power cooperation between India and Russia calls for the construction of 15 power blocks in India, including between four and eight units at Kudankulam.
