Over 660 temporary shelters set up for Ukrainian refugees in Russia - emergencies ministry

MOSCOW. Aug 8 (Interfax) - Up to 49,000 people who fled fighting in eastern Ukraine are currently staying at temporary shelters on Russian territory, Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry spokesman Alexander Drobyshevsky told Interfax on Friday.

The number of such people has increased by more than 1,000 over the past 24 hours, he said.

"As of Friday morning, there are 662 temporary shelters accommodating 48,833 people, including 16,337 children. Another 19 temporary shelters have been set up in the past 24 hours alone. The number of refugees placed there has grown by 1,300," he added.

The ministry's telephone hotline has received 5,848 calls these people, Drobyshevsky said.

The Emergency Situations Ministry continues to help Ukrainian refugees relocate from the Rostov region, the Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol to other Russian regions. As many as 9,794 people have already been transported by air, 11,618 by road, and 7,099 by rail.

As many as 1,478 Ukrainian citizens, among them 215 children, have received medical care in a mobile hospital of the ministry's southern regional search and rescue unit in the Rostov region's city of Donetsk since July 2.

Up to 1,740 tonnes of humanitarian supplies intended for the Ukrainian refugees have been delivered by air and by road, Drobyshevsky said.
