Luhansk militia claims to have taken control of Dolzhansky border checkpoint

MOSCOW. Aug 8 (Interfax) - The militia of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic (LPR) claims to have taken control of the Dolzhansky checkpoint on the border with Russia.

"The militia has taken control of the Dolzhansky checkpoint at the border with Russia," the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) said on Friday via Twitter. It said two enemy armored vehicles were destroyed in the process.

It was reported earlier with reference to the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council, that following three days of fighting, Ukrainian military units engaged in defending the border in the southeast of the Luhansk region reunited with the main forces involved in the operation near Savur-Mohyla and Amvrosiyivka.

There were reports in the media and on social networking sites earlier that a group of Ukrainian forces including units from the 24th, 51st, and 72nd Mechanized Brigades, the 79th Airmobile Brigade, the 3rd Special Forces Regiment, and the State Border Service encircled near Chervonopartyzansk, Dolzhansky, and Dyakove in the Luhansk region had managed to break out and reunite with the main forces.

Officers serving at the Russian customs checkpoint of Novoshakhtinsk were evacuated in early August amid intense fighting not far from the Dolzhansky checkpoint on the other side of the border.
