Russia's Northern Fleet detects, ousts presumably U.S. submarine - Russian Navy Main Staff
MOSCOW. Aug 9 (Interfax) - The Russian Northern Fleet's anti-submarine forces have detected a foreign submarine in Russia's boundary waters and ousted it, a spokesman for the Russian Navy Main Staff told journalists on Saturday.
A foreign submarine, presumably a U.S. Navy Virginia-class one, was detected by Northern Fleet forces on duty in the Barents Sea on August 7, the spokesman said.
"An anti-submarine attack group and an Ilyushin Il-38 anti-submarine aircraft were sent to the said area to search and track the sub. The Northern Fleet anti-submarine forces' active maneuvers ousted the submarine from the Russian Federation's boundary waters. Contact with the submarine continued for about 27 minutes, after which the American submarine left the area," the Navy Main Staff spokesman said.
