Over 1,000 persons putting out peat bog fires in Tver region

TVER. Aug 11 (Interfax) - The extinguishment of peat bog fires and their cleanup continues in the Tver region. Some 1,122 persons and 230 vehicles are engaged in the operation, the regional emergency situations department told Interfax on Monday.

"The firefighting effort is being assisted by eight aircraft: four Mil Mi-8 helicopters, three Kamov Ka-32 helicopters and one Beriyev Be-200 plane. Sixteen task groups were monitoring the conditions today in order to detect possible wildfires in the region," he said.

Seven wildfires were detected in the past 24 hours and five of them were confined, the regional government told Interfax.

"The coordinated efforts of all sides helped cut the wildfire areas near Orsha and the village of Staroye Melkovo in the Kalinin and Konakovo districts. There are no flames or internal burning near Orsha and the village of Staroye Melkovo now," the source pointed out.
