Lavrov sees change for the better in Western media coverage of events in eastern Ukraine
SOCHI. Aug 12 (Interfax) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov believes the Western media have been gradually reporting more truthful information on what is happening in south-eastern Ukraine and thanked Russian journalists for their contribution to such coverage of these events.
"Western media are beginning, though unwillingly, to cover the situation quite extensively, showing all the horrors that the civilian population is experiencing there," Lavrov said to journalists on Tuesday.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) issued a bulletin describing the humanitarian situation in the Luhansk and Donetsk regions on Monday, Lavrov said. "It presents quite a sad picture: thousands killed and injured, no electricity and drinking water, and no way to ensure the functioning of hospitals, retirement homes, and other social infrastructure facilities," Lavrov said.
"Hence, though belatedly, even those who first assumed quite a restrained position regarding the ongoing events are starting to tell the truth, and I thank Russian journalists who greatly contributed to making sure that the truth has finally been heard from various newspapers, TV screens, and international organizations," he said.
