Russia supports OSCE condemnation of Ukraine's attempts to restrict media freedom by law - Foreign Ministry
MOSCOW. Aug 13 (Interfax) - The Russian Foreign Ministry has shown understanding for the call of OSCE Representative on the Freedom of the Media to Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada to drop provisions of the bill on sanctions threatening the freedom of expression and pluralism.
"We support the principled condemnation by OSCE of the attempts of Kyiv to bring the policy of restricting the operations of the media to the rank of law," says a commentary of the ministry's Information and Press Department on the reaction of OSCE Representative of the Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatovic to the latest attempts of restricting the freedom of speech in Ukraine.
"We regard with understanding the call of OSCE Representative D. Mijatovic to members of Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to drop the provisions of the law endangering media freedom and pluralism and going against its international commitments," the commentary says.
On numerous occasions Russia has drawn the attention of the international community to the regular violations of the freedom of speech and the security of journalists in Ukraine, the Foreign Ministry says.
