Kyiv asks UN Secretary General to extend mandate of human rights monitoring mission in Ukraine by 3 more months
KYIV. Aug 14 (Interfax) - Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin has sent a letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon asking for a three-month extension to the mandate of the UN human rights monitoring mission.
Ukraine is interested in the further presence of UN human rights mechanisms and their support of processes aimed at ensuring and protecting human rights and basic freedoms in Ukraine, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry press office said in a statement. "The situation is Ukraine demands the closest attention in eastern Ukraine and Crimea," the document said.
The main task of the mission is to study the human rights situation at various sites, with special emphasis on south-eastern Ukraine and to compose relevant reports for the office of the UN commissioner on human rights, the Foreign Ministry said.
The UN monitoring mission on human rights has been working in Ukraine since March 15, 2014 on the invitation of the Ukrainian government.
