Number of ASF outbreaks in EU increases to 83, Russian watchdog says
MOSCOW. Aug 15 (Interfax) - The number of African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreaks in the EU has increased to 83, the Russian agricultural watchdog, Rosselkhoznadzor, said.
This included 50 cases of infected wild boars and 33 cases of infected domesticated hogs.
Latvia had the most ASF outbreaks - 62. In Poland there were 14 outbreaks and in Lithuania there were seven.
Experts suggest that a large part of the infections in Poland remain unregistered. This substantially increases the risk of introducing the disease into neighboring countries, the statement said.
At present, Estonia is part of what Russian legislation has designated as the threatened zone, which is 150 km from the outbreak of the disease.
The Estonian veterinary and food department is planning to conduct a mass inspection, which will include 931 pig farms, in connection with the threat of an ASF outbreak.
