EU expects cooperation between Russia, Ukraine, Red Cross in delivering humanitarian aid - ambassador

MOSCOW. Aug 15 (Interfax) - The European Union expects that Russia will fully comply with international law and will cooperate with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Ukrainian government in delivering humanitarian aid to eastern Ukraine, Head of the EU Delegation to Russia Vygaudas Usackas said.

"It is obvious that, in light of the latest developments in Ukraine, the Ukrainians fear that military intervention could take place under the aegis of humanitarian aid. To dispel these concerns, there should be transparency and compliance with international practices. Humanitarian aid should be rendered based on international humanitarian law, with the Ukrainian leadership's clear consent, and with the understanding that the ICRC will act as the distributor of this aid," Usackas said in an interview with Interfax.

"I hope such assistance will be provided in keeping with the agreements that have been achieved. I view this positively because this could possibly become a positive turning point from which Ukraine and Russia could resolve humanitarian problems together," he said.
