Criminal case on vandalism opened over attempt to paint spire of skyscraper in central Moscow - police

MOSCOW. Aug 20 (Interfax) - A criminal case on vandalism has been opened over the incident with the spire of the skyscraper on Kotelnicheskaya Embankment, Moscow police press office told Interfax.

Moscow police detained four suspects - two men and two young women, who are Moscow residents, the press office said.

"These individuals have been held administratively liable repeatedly for different offenses committed," the press office said.

It was reported earlier that unidentified people had raised a Ukrainian flag on the spire of the Stalin-style skyscraper on Kotelnicheskaya Embankment early on Wednesday. Unidentified people had painted half of the star crowning the skyscraper's spire blue.

A law enforcement source told Interfax that several young men with climbing gear had been brought to the Tagansky district police department on suspicion that they could have been responsible for raising the flag.

Industrial climbers are clearing the star of the blue paint now.

The young people face up to three years in prison.
