Brazil to not yield to possible EU request to limit food exports to Russia - ambassador

MOSCOW. Aug 21 (Interfax) - The European Union has not asked Brazil to not enlarge food exports to Russia but the government will not be limiting entrepreneurial activity even if this request is made, Brazilian Ambassador to Russia Antonio Guerreiro said.

"Our government representatives assured me no one from the European Union had contacted the Brazilian administration with regard to that issue or discussed it on any level. Even if such attempt is made the result will be nil. The Brazilian government never meddles with operations of our businessmen; we give them support but we never apply pressure or bans," Guerreiro said at a press conference in Moscow on Thursday.

"Foods subject to Russian retaliatory sanctions prevail in Brazilian exports to the Russian Federation," the diplomat noted.

In his words, 50 Brazilian meat packing plants and poultry farms have been cleared for exports to Russia.

The ambassador believes Brazil-Russia trade will grow amid the ban on EU foods.

Guerreiro did not make any projections regarding growth or a possible decision of exporters to raise prices in the context of the Russian retaliatory sanctions.
