Ukraine's NSDC confirms loss of Mi-24 helicopter in Luhansk region on Aug 20

KYIV. Aug 22 (Interfax) - Militiamen shot down a Mil Mi-24 helicopter of the Ukrainian Air Force in the Luhansk region on August 20, killing its crew, Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) spokesman Andriy Lysenko said at a press briefing in Kyiv on Friday.

"A Mi-24 helicopter was shot down while conducting a combat mission near the village of Heorhiyivka in the Luhansk region on August 20. Its crew died," he said.

The NSDC did not report the incident earlier "in order to be able to carry out a search operation and transport the dead bodies of the crewmembers to our territory," Lysenko said, declining to disclose how many Ukrainian servicemen were killed then.

The Mi-24 is a military-transport helicopter, which has a crew of two to three people, including pilot, co-pilot and flight engineer in certain modifications of this aircraft.
