Buryatia fighting wildfires in national park, reserve

CHITA. Aug 29 (Interfax) - Forests in Buryatia are still hit by wildfires and more flames have lately been discovered in four districts and the Barguzinsky Nature Reserve, the Buryat Forestry Agency press service reported.

"As of Friday morning, nine forest fires were raging across 627.5 hectares. Most of them were started by thunders," the report said.

According to the press service, fires have been confined in the Zabaikalsky National Park and the Barguzinsky district. Some 164 persons, 19 fire engines, a bulldozer and four tractors were extinguishing the blaze.

Buryatia has seen 1,087 wildfires on more than 99,000 hectares this season, as against 654 fires on 21,000 hectares in the respective period of last year. An emergency situation regime was put into place in the republic on August 20 because of the wildfires.
