African swine fever in domestic pigs registered in eight Russian regions in 2014

MOSCOW. Sept 3 (Interfax) - Since the beginning of the year, African swine fever among domestic pigs has been registered in eight regions, while cases of the virus among wild boar have been registered in 11 regions.

This was announced in a press release following a meeting of the commission for counteracting the spread of and eliminating African swine fever in Russia. The meeting was held by Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich.

There have been 32 cases of African swine fever among domestic pigs, seven of which occurred at large pig farms. Currently, 10 of the 32 cases have been resolved, while 22 have been quarantined.

It was noted at the meeting that the main threat in the spread of the virus is wild boards, particularly on Russia's border with Belarus.

Following the meeting, the relevant ministries and government agencies were tasked with presenting proposals on improving veterinary legislation. The Russian Ministry of Natural Resources must work with Belarus to take measure in preventing the spread of African swine fever among wild boar.
