U.S. Sec of State asks Armenia, Azerbaijan to mitigate Karabakh tensions
YEREVAN. Sept 5 (Interfax) - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is ready to assist in the Karabakh peace process.
Kerry had a trilateral meeting with Armenian President Serzh Sargsian and Azeri President Ilham Aliyev in Newport, the UK, to discuss the Karabakh settlement prospects, the Armenian presidential press service told Interfax.
"The sides presented positions maintained by their countries in the negotiations. State Secretary Kerry said there was no alternative to the peaceful resolution of the problem and called on the sides to find mechanisms for mitigating conflict tensions and building confidence," the press service said.
"J. Kerry also pointed to the importance of further negotiations in the format of the OSCE Minsk Group chairmen and expressed the readiness to assist in the search for peaceful settlement ways. The U.S. State Secretary emphasized that the political will of the sides was vital for the peace process," the press service continued.
The U.S. secretary of state met with the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan on Thursday morning.
