Ukrainian politician's memorial plaque removed from house in central Moscow

MOSCOW. Sept 5 (Interfax) - A plaque commemorating the Ukrainian politician Mykhailo Hrushevskyi has been stolen from the facade of a building in central Moscow, a source familiar with the situation told Interfax.

Last Thursday vandals damaged the facade of the building number one of the house number 2/3 in Pogodin Street in Moscow's Khamovniki district, he said.

They also stole the memorial plaque which read: "The prominent Ukrainian statesman and USSR academic Mykhailo Serhiyovych Hrushevskyi lived in this house."

There has no official confirmation yet of this report.

Hrushevskyi was a Ukrainian historian, public figure and politician. He was one of the leaders of the Ukrainian national movement, chairman of the Ukrainian Central Rada, and a professor at Lviv University. In 1918 he was elected as President of the Ukrainian People's Republic.
