Siberian wildfire zone shrinks almost 7,000 hectares over weekend

NOVOSIBIRSK. Sept 8 (Interfax) - Forty-two forest fires raged across 35,606.7 hectares in the Siberian Federal District on Monday morning, the district department of the Federal Forestry Agency (Rosleskhoz) said.

Most of the fires, 31 across 34,669 hectares, are burning in Tuva.

There are five fires across 788 hectares in the Trans-Baikal territory, four across 141 hectares in the Krasnoyarsk territory and one fire across seven hectares in Buryatia.

Sixteen fires have been confined to 5,999 hectares in Tuva, the Trans-Baikal territory and the Krasnoyarsk territory.

Consequently, the wildfire area has shrunk 6,700.2 hectares over the past weekend, from 42,306.9 hectares on Friday morning.

Nine fires were put out across 1,125.5 hectares in Tuva, Buryatia, the Trans-Baikal territory and the Krasnoyarsk territory in the past 24 hours.

In all, the Siberian Federal District has seen 7,915 wildfires across 1,796,000 hectares this season.
