Russia not involved in arms race - Putin
MOSCOW. Sept 10 (Interfax) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has ruled out the possibility of Russia getting involved in a new arms race.
"We sometimes get the impression that some people want to start a new arms race. We will, of course, not get involved in this race. It's absolutely out of the question," Putin said at a Wednesday meeting on the work on the draft version of the state armaments program for the 2016-2025 period.
"We will proceed from the real development forecasts," he said.
Putin said that the government has made two versions of its tentative forecast of Russia's economic development and it will be debated in a meeting between the president and government officials on Wednesday.
"We will proceed solely from the real situation, from our capabilities, and we will not overstate our military expenditures," Putin said.
Putin suggested a detailed discussion on what weapons systems should be developed and how they will reflect the new threats.
